First Fridays Bring The Kansas City Crossroads District Alive

Kansas City is known for its big and splashy annual events, but there's a monthly festival that brings out residents from all over the metro area for an evening of arts, dining and fun. For the past few years, the Cossroads Arts District in Kansas City has played host to First Fridays. Fast becoming a Kansas City favorite, "First Fridays" are when the art galleries of the Crossroads District stay open from 7 to 9 p.m. the first Friday of every month.

Economic Downturn Means More Rentals

Several local developments that were planned as condos have begun renting out apartment space.  Examples include Piper Lofts, 117 W. 20th St., and Windows Lofts, 380 W. 22nd St., both in the Crossroads Arts District.  St. Louis-based developer Blue Urban owns both buildings, whose units lease for around $800 to $2000 or more per month.

Downtown Kansas City's on Sale - Make That For Rent

Brenda Clevenger, an agent with Platinum Realty, said there might as well be a blue light over the Kansas City skyline, signaling the 10 percent to 25 percent discounts on most downtown condominiums.

But it will take more than discounts, an $8,000 first-time-buyer tax credit and historically low mortgage rates to make a dent this year in the Downtown Council of Kansas City's goal of doubling Downtown's population.

Adding significantly to that population, currently about 17,000, will rely most heavily on the growing number of downtown apartment projects that developers and downtown home shoppers are gravitating toward, sources said.
